City’s roads depots to be upgraded, first up is Atlantis

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is improving the Atlantis Roads Infrastructure Management (RIM) Depot to further improve on service delivery. The planned upgrades form part of a wider programme to improve the roads depots across the City. The City’s Urban Mobility directorate has identified four depots for the initial phase of upgrades and these include the Atlantis, Hout Bay, Strand and Kraaifontein RIM depots.
Cape Town’s road network is the City’s largest asset, comprising of approximately 10 450 km and the maintenance of this network is vital to ensure that residents, business and industry can rely on the system for commercial and private activities. The teams responsible for this role form part of the City’s Road Infrastructure Management department and are based at the various RIM depots across the city.
‘The City has embarked on this upgrade project to improve the utilisation of the physical space and provide dignified working conditions that are compliant with the relevant health and safety regulations. Our aim is to create a more streamlined and productive workspace for the staff, which will ultimately facilitate improved service delivery in each area.
‘It is also worth noting that the project design for this depot has received a four star certification from the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA), which further demonstrates the City’s commitment to sustainable solutions in response to climate change mitigation.
‘For the initial phase of the programme, we have selected one depot in each of the City’s four areas. These include the Atlantis, Strand, Kraaifontain and Hout Bay depots, which have the biggest space constraints and currently face the most operational challenges. I look forward to seeing the newly upgraded Atlantis depot in the coming months and will be visiting the other three projects as they progress,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.
The Atlantis depot upgrade project is expected to be completed towards the end of next year, if all goes according to plan. In the interim the staff will be operating from the depot in Mamre.
The Hout Bay, Kraaifontein and Strand depots are at different stages of the planning process and timelines for construction will be communicated with residents as these are confirmed.
